5 Things to do this weekend instead of Preakness

Personally, I think that Preakness is awesome. First off, it's a Maryland tradition, secondly it requires big hats and cute sundresses, and finally it's an opportunity to drink classy alcoholic beverages (or bottomless beer if you're going for the Mug Club). But Preakness isn't for everyone, especially if you're not working with a big budget (tickets are $70 and up), so here are some other event options this weekend.

Union Craft Brewing Black Friday Pt. II

Friday, May 16

I sorta have a crush on Union Craft Brewing, the place is more charming than any man I've ever met. Union Craft Brewing is hosting the second evening in its Black Friday series this Friday.  Blacksauce Kitchen will be barbecuing, Union will release a new beer, and Jordan August will be playing live music. There's no admission, no reservation required, and bbq and brews are pay as you go. I wasn't planning to go, but I think I've talked myself into it...

Relax with free yoga downtown

Every saturday through Oct.

Enjoy a morning yoga lesson courtesy of Merritt Athletics and the Downtown Partnership. The classes are held every Saturday from 10 - 11 a.m. in Center Plaza (located at the corner of N. Charles and Fayette Street) and are absolutely free, just be sure to bring a towel or mat.

Wine in the Woods

May 17 & 18th

30 local wineries will gather in Symphony Woods in Columbia for the 22nd annual Wine in the Woods wine tasting festival this weekend. For $32 ($40 at the door) you can sample unlimited wines from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some of the wineries on the list include Boordy Vineyards, Fiore Winery St. Michaels Winery and Serpent Ridge Vineyards. And since you'll be drinking all day there are a ton delicious food options to help you absorb all the alcohol. There will also be six musical acts each day and a variety of vendors. If you're going to skip out on Preakness this is definitely a great alternative.

2014 Preakness Hot Air Balloon Festival at Turf Valley

May 15 through 17

Somehow this event is associated with Preakness, but I'm not exactly sure how, so I'm still counting it as a non-Preakness activity. For three days Turf Valley in Ellicott City will be home to more than 20 hot air balloons. This is a great event for families, especially since the festival features cartoon balloons, face painting, games, etc. or if you're a photographer this could be a good opportunity to take some interesting photos. Admission to the festival is free, but parking is $10 a car.

Art Outside Free Art Festival

Sunday, May 18

Inspired by the art festivals held in Druid Hill during the 1950s and 60s,  Art Outside brings together artists and their fans for a day of fun. The festival is filled from beginning to end with activities and events, including performing arts from Baltimore area schools, children’s arts and crafts, and local food trucks. Art Outside will be held in Druid Hill Park rain or shine.

And, if all else fails... just suck it up and watch the Preakness on t.v.
